One of Bulgaria’s oldest towns, Veliko Tarnovo is located in the north central part of the country, at the foot of the Balkan Mountains. It was built on three hills (Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, and Sveta Gora) and around the river of Yantra. The town is also known as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185 - 1393).
