Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo

The Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo are a group of rock-hewn churches, chapels, monasteries and cells. They are situated in the valley of the Roussenski Lom River, several kilometers from the village of Ivanovo and about 20 km south of the town of Rousse. The complex is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 and is well know for its well preserved medieval frescoes. Some of the churches are open for visiting, but are not functioning at the moment.

The main church is located on a high rocky banks about 38m above the river.

There are two ways to get to the church - one goes directly up the stairs, while the other is a bit longer, but offers a beautiful view over the valley.

The entrance to the only church open for visitors is through a crack in the rocks.

The Church of the Holy Virgin is known with the well preserved valuable frescoes.

Among the ancient frescoes one can distinguish the scenes “The Last Supper”, “St. Joan the Baptist”, images of Jesus Christ, portraits of saints and many others.
