Varna is the largest city on the Bulgarian Black See side and the third largest city in Bulgaria. The city was know as Odessos in the ancient times and was populated with Thracians. The oldest gold treasure in the world was discovered in the Varna Necropolis and dates to V–IV c.BC.
Nowadays the town is an important administrative, maritime, tourist and cultural centre for the region. Among the international cultural events taking place in the city are the Varna Summer and Love is Madness festivals.

Located in the center of the city, the Square is named after the official announcement of the independence of Bulgaria on September 22, 1908. Next to the square is located the building of the dramatic theater and the opera. The construction of the building began in 1912 but it was completed after the First World War. On October 29th 1932, the first theatrical season is opened with the production of Stoyan Bachvarov, whose name the theater carries today. From 1947 the building is also used by the Varna Opera.

Sea garden
Sea garden
The sea garden is one of the emblems of the town since 1881, when the city garden and seaside park was arranged. During the years the garden gradually grew and becomes one of the favourite places for recreation and fun of the citizens of Varna. One could enjoy long walks in the park, a swimming pool complex, tennis court, open air thater and a children's playing complex. Beside of the plenty of sport and fun activities in the marine park you can visit the Natural Science Museum, the Naval Museum and the Astronomy Complex planetarium, the first in the country. You can also visit the the city zoo, the Terrarium, Aquarium and even watch a dolphins show in the Dolphinarium.

The multifunctional complex for congress, cultural and sport events was open in 1968. It has several multi-purpose halls, recreation center, fitness center, press center and a shopping center. Just behind the palaca of culture and sport is located the oldest technical educational institution in Bulgaria. The Maritime School was established on 9th January 1881.

The 4th largest preserved Roman Thermae in Europe and the largest one in the Balkans. The Thermae are situated in the south-eastern part of the city, which under the Roman Empire was known as Odessos. The complex is covering an area of 7000 sq.m and was constructed in the late 2nd century. The Roman Thermae of Varna feature the whole range of facilities including a changing room and hot, warm, and cold pools and a dedicated space with social and athletic functions. The ancient Baths were in use for about 100 years.

The sailing vessel was built in 1984 and since then it is part of the Bulgarian Marine Navy. It is also used for the training and qualification of students from the Maritime Academy in Varna. The barquentine has participated in many international regattas.
