The church is situated in the village of Dobarsko, about 17 km away from the town of Bansko, in the southern foothills of the Rila Mountains. It was built in 1614 with an unusual layout, representing a complex three-nave basilica. There is an assumption that the year of construction is 1122 years, as a large marble slab built in front of its altar testifying for possible construction in this period of time.

The church is built of treated stones and is 8,37 m long, 6,5 m wide and 5,2 m high. It is designed to be a natural air conditioner, maintaining a relatively constant temperature throughout the year for the preservation of the murals. Even during the coldest days and nights the temperature never falls below 0 degrees.

Several people have worked on painting the church. The First Master has painted the main scenes and saints and the Calf and apprentices have decorated and painted the painting, where the difference in quality is obvious. The painters haven't signed the pictures, because according to the medieval understanding the creator should remain anonymous, as the God moved his hand while painting.

Although the authors were limited by the Orthodox canon where exactly the scenes from the Old and New Testaments and the different saints should be painted in the church, they have included a number of atypical images - Western soldiers, Venetian galleries and images of Catholic saints. One of the most famous icons is an image of Jesus Christ located in an object looking like a rocket (top to the left).
